PA emissions testing: find a station that does it
Emissions testing depends on where your vehicle is registered and what you drive. Once you know a test is needed, look for a station that specifically offers emissions—not just safety inspections.

Pennsylvania has a separate emissions inspection program in 25 counties. PennDOT's regulations generally cover gasoline-powered vehicles from model year 1975 onward with a gross vehicle weight rating of 9,000 pounds or less, but exemptions apply. The test method also varies by region and vehicle. Check your registration county, then confirm your vehicle's requirement with an emissions station or PennDOT's hotline at 1-800-265-0921.
Find a station that performs emissions testing
Search your city or ZIP and choose the emissions filter. Open a station listing to check its phone number and directions. Call before going: a shop that does safety inspections may not have the equipment or certification to perform your vehicle's emissions test.

Bring the right paperwork
PennDOT's emissions regulations require the vehicle registration card before testing. Bring current proof of insurance as well. If your vehicle is new, low-mileage, or otherwise may be exempt, tell the station before booking and ask what documentation it needs to confirm that status.
If your vehicle fails
Keep the emissions inspection report and ask the station what repair form to complete. Pennsylvania's rules provide one free retest at the original station when you return within 30 calendar days with the report and completed repair form. Ask about diagnosis and repairs separately before authorizing work.
If you live in a county without separate emissions testing
The other 42 counties do not require a separate annual emissions inspection. PennDOT says most passenger vehicles and light trucks there still receive a visual anti-tampering check during the safety inspection. You can search for a safety station without filtering for emissions.
