PA vehicle inspection checklist

Before you call

• Check the expiration month on your current safety sticker.
• Find the county on your vehicle registration; emissions requirements depend on the registered vehicle and county.
• Note your vehicle's model year, fuel type, and type so the station can confirm the right service.

Ask the station

• Can you inspect this vehicle and do both safety and emissions if required?
• What is the full price, including any sticker and test charges?
• Do I need an appointment, and how long should I expect to wait?
• What are your inspection hours, and what happens if my vehicle fails?

What to bring

Bring your current registration card and proof of insurance. PennDOT's emissions regulations require the registration card before an emissions test; PennDOT also says inspection stations require proof of insurance. If the vehicle was just purchased or registered, call the station about any additional paperwork before you go.

Check what you can see

Turn on the headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and wipers. Look at tire condition and check for obvious damage to the windshield or mirrors. PennDOT's safety checklist covers many more items, including brakes, steering, suspension, and exhaust; only a certified inspector can determine whether your vehicle passes.

Before you leave

• If the vehicle passes, check the new sticker's expiration month and keep your receipt.
• If it fails, ask for the failed items and a repair estimate before approving work.
• For a failed emissions test, keep the report and ask about the free retest paperwork and 30-day deadline.
