When is your PA inspection sticker due?
Use the expiration month on your current sticker to plan the visit. Most passenger vehicles need a safety inspection every 12 months, and PennDOT allows an inspection up to 90 days early.
Find a stationRead your current sticker first
PennDOT says the safety sticker tells you when the next inspection is due. If yours expires soon, book before the expiration month ends. You do not have to wait until the last week: PennDOT allows a vehicle to be inspected up to 90 days before its next expiration date.
- Check the month and year on the current safety sticker.
- Call a station early enough to allow time for repairs if the vehicle fails.
- If you also need emissions, ask whether the shop can complete both tests in one appointment.
Will inspecting early change the next expiration?
For most passenger cars and light trucks, PennDOT says a passing sticker is valid for one year from the month of inspection or one year from the current sticker's expiration. Ask the station which expiration month your vehicle will receive before booking early. Your inspection and registration expirations do not have to match.
If emissions applies
PennDOT says many counties require an emissions inspection before the safety inspection can be completed. Check your registration county and ask the station if your vehicle needs emissions, then schedule a shop that can do the required tests.
Just bought a car or moved to PA?
PennDOT says a newly registered vehicle must pass a safety inspection within 10 days. Its buyer checklist also says a purchased vehicle without valid required inspection stickers must be inspected within 10 days of purchase. New residents have separate title and registration steps, so check those deadlines too rather than relying on an old out-of-state sticker.
If your sticker has already expired
Arrange an inspection promptly and ask the station about its next opening. An appointment does not extend the sticker's validity. If the vehicle has been outside Pennsylvania continuously for 30 days or more, PennDOT's consumer FAQ describes a specific 10-day window after reentry; check that official guidance if it applies to you.
